The Goths were the Germanic tribe who left the most relevant archaeological traces, together with several citations in Greek and Latin historical works during the age of barbarian migrations. The final Gothic settlement in Italy, France and afterwards in Spain, blended those people with local inhabitants whose results can be observed in loan-words and place-names. As far as the intermingling with Romans is concerned, the Goths wouldn’t be very different from other Germanic peoples, for instance Lombards or Burgunds. The Goths produced a surplus, namely a written literature in their own language and alphabet which went with them till the end of their history. This book starts exactly from the end of the historical vicissitudes of the Goths, from the point in which the large part of works about the Goths stop their investigations. What did it become of Gothic literature and writing? The author describes Ostrogoths and Visigoths during the gradual extinguishing of their language, offers reasons to the causes of it and, at the same time, proposes to the reader the reasons which explain why Gothic writing and Gothic excerpta suddenly re-appeared during the Carolingian age: two-hundred and fifty years before the Ostrogothic power in Italy had perished and a century was passed from the end of the Toledo’s kingdom. The knowledge about the surviving of a linguistic and literary memory needs a codicological and philological approach together with some reflections in particular on the alphabetic series which were transcribed at the very end of eighth century usually naively defined as ‘exotic’. At the end of the volume, the reader should be able to understand what was the Gothic bequest to the Carolingian age and, through it, to the Western world .
