The duel described in the floor-mosaic in the Leone Museum in Vercelli, eventfully saved from the demolition of the church of St. Maria Maggiore in the XVIII century, explains a lot of concepts concerning crusader propaganda: all data are expressed by the figures of the miles Christi and of his enemy, as by their names and weapons. The sources of this image are not connected exclusively to the Romanic models, but we can find them along a very extended line of development, since classic Antiquity and the texts of the first millennium of the Christian era (first of all, among the topics concerning the opinions about the Afro-Asiatic enemies). Chronicles of the first crusades and battles of the crusader kingdom give evidence of the same kind, till the coincidence of the mosaic with crusader ideology as it was at the time of the second Crusade (1146-1148). The preaching of this expedition was contemporary with the building of St. Maria Maggiore, and in both events the situation of Outremer, the acts done in order to help it and the Western knightly ideology are parts of a single frame.
