INCONTRI DI STUDIO (ALL THE BOOKS OF THE SERIES)
Spoleto 2010, pp. X-616, ils.
The volume contains the proceedings of the II De re monastica meeting, held in S. Salvo (near Chieti) and at the G. d’Annunzio University of Chieti from 16 to 18 May 2008. This was the second of a number of meetings devoted to studies on medieval monastic structures, in continuation with the first one held in Tergu (near Sassari) on September 2006. These meetings have offered the possibility, at national and international level, to exchange thoughts on different features concerning the institution and development of Benedictine monastic settlements during the Middle Ages. The papers presented at this second meeting are mainly focused on aspects connected to the construction sites for these monuments, in terms of building techniques adopted and gathering and processing of raw materials, as well as all decorative works. The papers included in the proceedings range from general overviews (F. Redi, Benedictine churches; F.R. Stasolla, The arrangement of construction sites for monasteries) to some local briefs (H.R. Sennhauser – Raetia; G. Cantino Wataghin – Northern Italy; G. Bianchi – Southern Tuscany). These studies have been enriched by detailed analyses on specific contexts (A. Appetecchia – Subiaco’s monasteries; P. F. Pistilli – SS. Trinità di Venosa; F. Ardizzone amd R. Di Liberto – Marittimo’s settlements). Most of these studies are focused on Abruzzo, the region hosting the meeting (M.C. Somma – Abruzzo’s Benedictine monasteries; S. Antonelli – Sculpted decorations; A. Faustoferri e D. Aquilano – SS. Vito and Salvo Monastery; G. Curzi – Wood carvers’ workshops; C. D’Alberto – The frescos at S. Pietro ad oratorium; S. Agostini – Abruzzo’s building and decorative stones). After the papers, the organizers have provided a session centered around the publication of the posters presented along the works, which in many instances represent real and effective contributions (S. Lusuardi Siena and C. Giostra – San Benedetto Po; M. Norcia – S. Gregorio d’Aquino and S. Domenico di Sora; V. Gambi – Marsica; A. Cetrangolo – S. Maria di Monteplanizio; D. Bianco – S. Pietro a Roccamontepiano; S. Cimini – The monasteries in the Sangro Valley; I. Della Morgia – S. Salvatore a Maiella; G. Di Rocco - S. Angelo in Altissimo at Civitacampomarano; E. Di Valerio – Building stones).
